The early 20th century was a time of rapid scientific advancement, as researchers made astonishing discoveries about radiation and radioactivity. But this new science also had dark consequences that weren't fully understood.
In this episode, we'll explore the tragic story of the Radium Girls, female factory workers who were exposed to dangerous radioactive materials and suffered horrific health effects like jaw necrosis and bone deterioration.
Their fight for justice revealed the corporate malfeasance of radium companies in covering up these health hazards, prioritizing profits over people. The Radium Girls' case led to new worker safety regulations and oversight bodies like OSHA.
Joined by Joe Campanelli from The Story of...Podcast, we discuss the little-known history of the Radium Girls and how they changed our understanding of science, business, and regulation in the nuclear age.
This dark legacy demonstrated what happens when science gets ahead of its own knowledge and understanding. It shows the importance of workplace safety regulations and not letting corporations cut corners at the expense of workers’ health. So while a historical recounting of the Radium Girls' tragedy, this conversation also touches on bigger themes of science, corporate incentives, expertise, and occupational hazards that still resonate today.

36. When Dr. Ian Stevenson’s Science Met the Children’s Memories of Past Lives
Tuesday Sep 12, 2023
Tuesday Sep 12, 2023
In the swirl of the 1960s, amidst a sea of skeptics, Dr. Ian Stevenson chose to forge his own path. Armed with a fervent curiosity and a clinical eye, he turned toward a phenomenon that beckoned with whispers of untold stories echoing through the ages – the seemingly inexplicable memories of children who recounted past lives with vivid detail and conviction.
Rejecting skepticism from his peers, Stevenson embarked on a revolutionary journey, investigating the enigmatic phenomenon of children who claim to remember past lives. Across continents, this fearless researcher documented over 2,500 cases, transforming ancient narratives into a compelling body of empirical evidence. Join us as we delve deep into Stevenson's captivating exploration that ventured into the realms of reincarnation memories, examining children's tales of recognizing past-life families and recalling unlearned languages, all under the scientific lens.
With an unwavering commitment to rigorous methodology, Stevenson brought a new level of academic credibility to the study of potential life after death. His work, a labyrinthine voyage into the complexities of human consciousness and brain science, sought to reveal the possibilities of an existence that transcended the boundaries defined by modern science. Stevenson's pioneering research opens a door into a world where the lines between life and death blur, offering a glimpse into the potential for a continuum of human existence that defies conventional understanding.

Has the absence of an external threat fueled the hostilities within our country? As we find ourselves trapped in a stress-inducing cycle of binary thinking, Americans have shifted away from seeking unifying values and instead huddle into group identities. The safeguards once offered by old media have vanished, replaced by an alternative reality that caters to our own narratives. In echo chambers, facts are rejected, and politics is oversimplified into one all-encompassing existential conflict.
While we engage in heated debates over culture war issues like abortion and create an LGBTQ boogeyman, the wealth gap continues to widen, and billionaires amass even greater riches.
Join Danny Smith from The Story of...Podcast and myself as we explore pressing questions: Are internal divisions pushing us to the brink of no return? Is this the most fractured period since the civil war? And, more importantly, what lies ahead for my Jersey property taxes when retirement calls? Don't miss this thought-provoking discussion!

Comedy's evolution has been a disruptive force, shattering societal taboos and relentlessly pushing boundaries. Amidst this ever-changing landscape, George Carlin stands as a steadfast and unwavering presence, a symbol of comedy's power to challenge and provoke. In this episode, joined by Ryan McGann from the Front Facelock Podcast and Shaun McGann, author and radio DJ, as we continue our journey through comedy's transformative path.
We trace comedy's journey from the vibrant '80s comedy clubs to the politically correct humor of the '90s and the emergence of edgier styles in the 2000s, we delve into the significance of personal perspectives and relatable comedy. Regardless of their chosen comedic style, comedians who bring authenticity and fresh viewpoints to their acts stand out. We also ponder the irreplaceability of legendary figures like Carlin, whose absence magnifies their legacy as their timeless works continue to inspire. Looking ahead, we contemplate the uncertain future of comedy, questioning whether there will be another comedian of Carlin's stature or if the comedy landscape will evolve with new voices and perspectives.

This episode delves into the alarming rise of fascism in American politics and around the world. Led by far-right populist movements and authoritarian leaders, this dark force is gaining support and posing a threat to democracy and human rights.
It's a fascinating discussion with Dr. Andrew Bard Schmookler, who has been warning about a fascistic force he saw gathering in our body politic since 2004, and we explore the reasons behind its resurgence and how we can fight back against it. Drawing on lessons from history, we discuss the similarities between today's political climate and the rise of totalitarian regimes in the 1930s, including the scapegoating of minority groups and the rejection of democratic norms. We also ruminate on the reasons the left was so unprepared for this challenge, and why some people may believe that the left is becoming more fascistic in its own ways.
As we examine the need for vigilance and action, the question arises: can we defeat fascism in this generation, or is Gen Z our last great hope
